3 ways to cut your mobile money fees this month
Mobile money fees in Ghana add up faster than most people notice. MTN MoMo, Telecel Cash, and AirtelTigo Money all charge transaction fees that, on small and frequent transfers, can quietly eat 2–4% of your money per month. Three small changes fix most of it.
1. Batch Your Transfers
If you're sending GHS 20 to a vendor on Monday, GHS 15 on Wednesday, and GHS 25 on Friday — you're paying three fees instead of one. One GHS 60 transfer costs a single fee. Get in the habit of consolidating transfers where you can, especially for predictable weekly payments.
2. Use Bank-to-MoMo When the Rate Is Better
Many banks offer lower fees for bank-to-MoMo transfers than sending from wallet to wallet. If your salary comes into a bank account anyway, consider whether paying a vendor directly from the bank transfer is cheaper than loading your wallet first and then paying out. Check the fee schedule for your specific bank and network combination.
3. Keep Enough Float to Avoid Emergency Top-Ups
Last-minute wallet top-ups from airtime or physical agents often carry higher fees and worse exchange rates. Keep a small cash buffer in your wallet so you're never forced into a premium top-up when you're in a hurry.
None of these tips require switching platforms or changing your financial habits dramatically. They just require paying attention to a cost most people never think twice about.
